Floris van Elderen started playing drums at the age of 16. In 2018 he graduated from the jazz department at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, with Martijn Vink, Lucas van Merwijk, Marcel Serierse and Gerhard Jeltes as his main subject teachers. As side subjects he studied snare drum with Haye Jellema and percussion with Bart Fermie.
After graduation Floris developed a broad musical interest in Latin-American and African traditional music. In 2019 he spent the summer in Havana, Cuba studying rhumba, son, salsa and timba from great masters such as José Luis “Changuito” Quintana, Rodney Barreto and Ruy-Lopez Nussa. Also he visited multiple Santeria-ceremonies in order to examine the musical heritage of the Batá.
In 2022 Floris spent the summer in São Paulo, Brazil in order to profoundly study the roots of Brazilian music, exposing himself mainly to Samba and Baião. He was given lessons by among others Edu Ribeiro, Celso de Almeida, Cuca Teixeira and Jorginho Saavedra.
Floris performed in many well-known venues and festivals, such as the Bimhuis, the Concertgebouw, the Doelen, North sea Jazz Festival, Holland Festival and the Grachtenfestival. Floris did multiple tours inside and outside of Europe.
